Medium-Frequency Electric Furnace: Operating Principle of the Medium-Frequency Electric Furnace

Based on the principle of electromagnetic induction, a medium-frequency induction furnace rectifies three-phase AC into DC and then converts the DC into an adjustable medium-frequency current. This current is supplied to a load consisting of capacitors and an induction coil—either connected in parallel or in series—generating a high‑density magnetic field within the induction coil. As this field cuts through the metallic workpiece, it induces large eddy currents in the material.

Why is it so hard for medium-frequency furnaces to recover? What path lies ahead?

As of now, more than 80% of domestic medium-frequency furnaces have ceased operations, and most scrap steel markets have entered a state of “price without volume.” Meanwhile, medium-frequency furnace operators are grappling with strategic choices; it may soon become clear who will emerge as the mainstay of future short-process steelmaking.
